The Goal
A player or shooter is given a pair of dice. The first roll is what will determine most of the winning or losing bets in the game. This first roll is called the Come Out. They must roll a 4, 5,6,8,9 or 10 to make what is called a point. If they roll a 2, 3 or 12 (natural carps) the shooter loses and must forfeit the dice. If they roll a 7 or 11, anyone who placed a bet on the pass line (we’ll cover this in a moment) wins and the shooter keeps rolling until they make a point number or crap out.
Once the point is determined, the shooter must either roll that same number before he craps out by throwing a 7. There are many bets that can be made during this whole process as well. There are side bets such as: rolling double 2’s, rolling a 4 and many more.
The main goal of the bettors and shooter is to bet on which they think will happen first. Will the shooter roll the point number or will they roll a 7 and crap out.
Various Bets and Their Odds
Pass Line (1.4% house edge): This bet wins if the first roll is a 7 or 11. If it is a 2, 3 or 12, you lose. If a 4, 5,6,8,9 or 10 are first rolled then your bet is placed on the side bar and will be determined in the next rolls. If the shooter rolls a 7 before the point number, you lose. If they roll the point number before crapping out, the pas line wins. This bet pays even money when won.
Don’t Pass (1.36% house edge): This bet is the complete opposite of the Pass line bet. Pays even money on all wins.
These are the two most common bets in craps and the best bets by far. The side bets will offer higher odds and bigger paydays, but often don't hit enough to make it a winning bet in the long run.

The game has no official origins, although most believe it dates back to the Crusades and was later brought to America by wealthy French landowners in Louisiana. The modern version is very much the same as it was back then with a few minor tweaks and additional bets, but the overall principle remains true to its original.
